If you are a school thinking of ways to teach the Anglo Saxons or Iron Age in a creative and hands on way, we can help! We can work with your pupils to facilitate them to build their very own Anglo Saxon house or other historical building using the traditional building methods of wattle and daub and thatch.
We can help you with bids for grants and introduce you to other heritage learning providers. Heritage Schools are a great place to start – they offer you CPD, support with planning, and resources. It’s definitely worth becoming a Heritage School.
Call us on 01297 444275 or email Charlotte Eve our Education Director directly at email@example.com to ask about an exciting building project with your school.

A classic example of the media making a drama out of mud building! Do they not realise we have been building with cob or mud for thousands or years and we still do!
This article about Kate and Alan Burrows looks at the most rustic of mud building! You can in fact build modern, ultra comfortable houses from mud and still spend very little. They are healthy, breathable, sustainable, and beautiful. Come on one of our 4 day cob building courses and we’ll show you how to build your own mud house!
Wow that’s a long boring title for our post isn’t it! What it refers to though is actually very exciting. No really, it is!We joined this group with the long name and its a collection of inspiring people from all sorts of organisations across Dartmoor, Exmoor, the Devon coast and beyond who are passionate about delivering outdoor learning to schools across Devon.
Last week was their annual conference at Buckfastleigh Abbey and nearly 100 different schools from across Devon came to learn more about outdoor education and share ideas with each other.
We were chuffed to be asked to run a cob building workshop for the teachers and different educaiton providers. We showed the teachers how to make cob or daub and then together we built a wattle and daub wall. We talked about the Anglo Saxon Houses we build in schools, the pizza ovens we build in schools and everything else mud related we do!
It was a great day. If anyone who couldn’t make the conference would like to learn more about our work in schools teaching cob building then please get in touch on 01297 444275 or message us via the contact page on here.
Whilst we wait for our cob building courses to start in the Spring we’re always flat out carrying out cob house repairs, lime plastering and other repair work. If you have a cob house in Devon and you’re looking for advice or repair work please give us a call and we can come and discuss your options with you. We also travel across Dorset and Somerset for cob house repair projects. And our expertise in clay lump means we are also still carrying out projects in Norfolk. Call us anytime on 01297 444275.
A great piece in the Bridport and Lyme Regis paper about our cob house building and pizza oven workshops locally.
Read it here.
We’ve only gone and done it! Yesterday we waved goodbye to our cob home in Norfolk. We have so many happy memories of hundreds of you visiting us there to learn to build with cob, sculpting pizza ovens with us and eating endless woodfired pizzas by the lake.
And now begins the new cob adventure on the Devon and Dorset border near Lyme Regis. We’re so excited to be running all our workshops from now on in such an idyllic spot by the Jurassic Coast. Come and see us in 2017!

We love working in schools to build outdoor classrooms, Anglo Saxon Longhouses and roundhouses. Kate is just finishing the thatch today for the wonderful roundhouse she has been building with the children at Pulham Market Primary School. The children have been fantastic working with the wattle and daub, mixing up cob, helping with the timber frame and they have learnt all about thatching too.
If your school would like to book us for an outdoor workshop please get in touch at firstname.lastname@example.org or phone 07949241815. All check out our school workshops page for more info.
