Now taking bookings for 2017 cob building courses – scroll down for dates.
Our 4 day course is designed to give you all the skills you need to go away and start building your own affordable, sustainable and beautiful cob or cob-bale home, garden studio or other cob structure. Your course tutor is Kate Edwards – an award winning and extremely experienced cob builder, tutor and sculptor. Each day you will enjoy a mix of both theory and plenty of hands-on practical work, in the idyllic setting of Monkton Wyld Court a stones throw from the Jurassic Coast, just outside Lyme Regis. Our course has been developed to be great fun and inspiring but it is also full of practical advice and teaching which will ensure you really can go away at the end of the earth building course and build yourself your own affordable and sustainable home which requires almost no heating and meets all modern building regulations. We aim to demystify the building process and empower as many people as possible to build their own home and take control of their own future.

We’ll serve you delicious lunches whilst you relax and take in the view. We also provide delicious homemade lunches to help keep your energy levels up and plenty of tea, coffee and cakes. Being outside all day and working with the cob, you’ll be amazed how peckish you get!
Most people choose to camp or book the B&B accommodation at Monkton Wyld Court. If you opt for this then you’ll be with most of the other cobbers and you may decide to socialise together in the evenings around the fire pit and at the organic pub on site! If you’d rather choose accommodation off site you are spoilt for choice being on the coast near Lyme Regis, Charmouth and Bridport. See our Accommodation page for more details.
Who is our course designed for? We have created a workshop that meets the learning needs of most people. If you’re a professional in the construction industry or serious about building your own home we cover all the essential topics of building regulations, planning and structural engineering details. If you are planning a smaller scale project we will inspire you to think creatively about what is possible. And if you are just after a new experience you can expect a great fun course packed with new information and friendly people. No previous building experience is required – the course is for everyone.
People of all ages and walks of life come and join us here to learn about earth building – past participants include an architect from Japan, a teacher from Canada, an actor from Manchester, a mother from Norfolk, a sculptor from Scotland, and retired couple building their dream home in Portugal. Please see our Course Content page for full details of what we cover.
