4 day complete cob building course

“We have created the most comprehensive, intensive, useful and inspiring cob house building course possible. Designed for everybody, what ever your previous experience, what ever your cob building dreams or plans are, we will empower you to build your own cob house or studio after just 4 days. Theory, hands-on practice, the latest research and regulations – we cover it all. You will leave the course confident you know everything you need to make your cob building dream a reality. “ Kate Edwards, International Cob Tutor/ Course Leader.

Our 4 day course is designed to give you all the skills you need to go away and start building your own affordable, sustainable and beautiful cob or cob-bale home, garden studio or other cob structure. Your course tutor is Kate Edwards – an award winning and extremely experienced cob builder, tutor and sculptor. Each day you will enjoy a mix of both theory and plenty of hands-on practical work, in an idyllic setting a stones throw from the Jurassic Coast, just outside Lyme Regis. Our course has been developed to be great fun and inspiring but it is also full of practical advice and teaching which will ensure you really can go away at the end of the earth building course and build yourself your own affordable and sustainable home which requires almost no heating and meets all modern building regulations. We aim to demystify the building process and empower as many people as possible to build their own home and take control of their own future.

Accommodation options:

Most people choose to stay at Hook Farm Camping and Caravan Park just half a mile down the lane. An easy walk from the course site. If you opt for this then you’ll be with most of the other cobbers and you may decide to socialise together in the evenings! We always get a brilliant bunch of people on our courses from all over the world and UK –  and many people on their own. Often people make life long friends they stay in touch with after the course. If you’d rather choose alternative accommodation you are spoilt for choice being on the coast near Lyme Regis, Charmouth and Bridport.  See our Accommodation page for more details.

Who is our course designed for?

We have created a workshop that meets the learning needs of most people. If you’re a professional in the construction industry or serious about building your own home we cover all the essential topics of building regulations, planning and structural engineering details. If you are planning a smaller scale project we will inspire you to think creatively about what is possible. And if you are just after a new experience you can expect a great fun course packed with new information and friendly people. No previous building experience is required – the course is for everyone.

Everyone is welcome on our cob courses – no previous experience is necessary.

People of all ages and walks of life come and join us here to learn about earth building – past participants include an architect from Japan, a teacher from Canada, an actor from Manchester, a mother from Norfolk, a sculptor from Scotland, and retired couple building their dream home in Portugal. Please see our Course Content page for full details of what we cover.

Where exactly is the course?

In 2019 we will be running our workshops at our own bespoke cob site in Uplyme, on the edge of Lyme Regis on the Devon/ Dorset border in the UK. Our new site will allow us to create a bespoke cob workshop site for you with classroom and the opportunity to build permanent cob structures (subject to planning permission). The views are breath taking and its so close to the sea you can wind your way downhill after a day’s cobbing to the coast for a dip in the waves or maybe just an ice cream! The location is also in walking distance to lots of great holiday accommodation options including Hook Farm Campsite where most participants choose to stay. We have lots more details on accommodation here.
